Like a Nepenthe is a novella by Jeff Braimes, published in 2024. Based on a true story (as told by a friend) Like a Nepenthe is a coming of age tale based in the hazy malaise of Raymond WA in 1976. The first quarter of the story was written under fever when the author had Covid 19 in the spring of 2021. Braimes claims no memory of writing any of the first 10,000 words (including the semi-consensual sex scene) before his fever broke around chapter 7. He was as surprised and outraged as anyone after reading back through the piece, but saw no alternative other than to finish the strory— which he did over the course of the next three years before publishing it on the morning of his 60th birthday.
